We paddled/waded/swam in the North Sea just below these cliffs for about ten minutes before the extremely rapidly-moving waves threatened to inundate the grandparents (and, eventually, us). The younger folk then walked along the ridge up to Scarborough Castle, just visible on the cliffs at far-center.
Scarborough castle's keep, last defended and heavily damaged during the English Civil War.
Though a bit drafty, the keep is still a rather nice place to sit and survey the surrounding area from.
Unfortunately, they don't supply gunpowder and cannonballs to visitors. Pity.
The castle is surrounded by water on three sides; here the walls overlook the other part of the town.
