Departure

In the beginning, there was a boat, the ice-breaker Nathaniel B. Palmer, en route to a summer in Antarctica, and with space for about twenty students on the transit across the Pacific ocean.
We left from Port Hueneme, which seemed oddly appropriate given how close I used to live.
We spent nearly a full day in port before departure. The islands in the distance are the Channel Islands, which I had spent a week on a little over a year ago.
