Quantum tunneling and other useful quantum effects

I wrote a story on quantum physics before I knew much of anything about it; I should go back and change the physics now that I know better than to simply swipe some impressive sounding words from a physics encyclopedia and hope the reader doesn't know any better...

So what use is all this quantum physics stuff? Do we really care whether the cat is dead or alive, and even if so does it have any effect on our day to day lives?
