Tuesday 19 September 2000: the 5 (part II) and home

This morning we went back to pay for our meal last night. Luckily, the manager still had our bill and so we were able to pay in full. We got breakfast from an incompetent lady at Burger King, a library advocate and anti-new-dollar-billite, who gave Elisabeth double off for her coupon and attempted to give me an extra $10 in change. Luckily we escaped.

Escape from the perils of LA was not on our plate for today however. We were soon following signs that mentioned LA, and four hours later we came out of the depths of Los Angeles National Forest and beheld beneath us the full glory of LA's glistening haze. We were home. We stopped just short of Tech to fill up for gas for a last time. We had traveled 1,866 miles, for an average mileage of 28 miles per gallon. Up through Eureka on the way up we had averaged 37, but that was when we weren't driving in 80 mph air-conditioned bliss as we were on the 5 coming back.
